CT Hispanic Watch: Roberto Clemente Commemoration (Hartford, Puerto Rico)

EN The 12th Annual Roberto and Vera Clemente Commemoration took place last Sunday in Dunkin’ Park, home of the Hartford Yard Goats. The strong and united Puerto Rican community of Hartford and surrounding areas paid tribute to the life and legacy of one of baseball’s all-time greats, who happened to be a better human being than he was as a baseball player. Speakers included Deacon Ramon A. Rosado, Arunan Arulampalm (Mayor of Hartford), Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez (Superintendent of Hartford Public Schools), Attorney Jeffrey Dressler, and former Clemente teammate Steve Blass, plus a greeting video from the Clemente family and the student contest of the Sports and Medical Sciences Academy. Bomba de Aquí performed for the audience.

I had the privilege of having been invited to attend and photograph the 12th Annual Roberto and Vera Clemente Commemoration in Dunkin’ Park. Clemente, one of the greatest baseball players to ever don a uniform, died early in his life when his plane carrying relief aid for the victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua crashed off the coasts of his native Puerto Rico.

A fixture in Major League Baseball tributes since, his impact carries on in Connecticut due to the big Puerto Rican community in the state. The Hartford Yard Goats, always reaching out to the community, made this tribute possible.
